Group Assignment: Post # 5

Businesses and individuals must be aware of the information security and ethical issues that come together with their dependence and frequent use of information systems.

Not knowing or caring about these issues may bring about loss of confidential information and lasting damage to their business reputation. In this post, you will talk about the following:

1) Think of 2 to 3 ways in which businesses may violate privacy or ethical rights without realizing it.

2) How can the violations mentioned in the previous question be avoided or minimized ?

Answer:
1. a) Employers may be monitoring or reading employees' e-mail.
b) Spamming, sending out thousands and even hundreds of thousands of unsolicited e-mails.

2. a)
According to
the information provided by The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD), there is exemption.

The Ordinance provides specific exemptions from the requirements of the Ordinance. They include:
  • exemptions from the requirements on subject access for certain employment related personal data; and
  • exemptions from the subject access and use limitation requirements of the Ordinance where their application is likely to prejudice certain competing public or social interests, such as: security, defence and international relations; prevention or detection of crime; assessment or collection of any tax or duty; news activities; and health.
2. b)
To avoid any spamming email received, public can make an "Unsubscribe Request" to the Message Sender.

If you do not wish to receive further commercial electronic messages from a particular sender, you may choose to make an "unsubscribe request" to him/her. Now, senders of commercial electronic messages are required to provide an "unsubscribe facility" in the message for their recipients to make an "unsubscribe request".

One of the most effective ways to control spam is using protective softwares known as filters. While you cannot stop people from sending out spam to you with anti-spam filters, you can stop the messages from showing up in your inbox and have them deleted automatically. Filters allow you to easily block any e-mail messages carrying specified address, domain, subject, or text from being deposited in your inbox. A number of these filtering tools are currently available on the market.

    Group Assignment: Post # 2

This week we learned how B.I. tools (business intelligence) allow businesses to get more value and insight out of their databases.

    1. Visit the OLAP Service Online Demo and design three different grid reports using at least three dimensions per report. Each report must have at least one measure which is being analyzed along the chosen dimensions.
      • You may choose from any of the dimensions found along the left-hand side of the demo: Customer, Date, Employee, Delivery Date, Product, Reseller, Employee, etc.
      • You may choose from any of the measures under Internet Sales, Reseller Sales or Sales Summary (found along the left-hand side of the demo).
    2. Post the following content on your blog regarding the grid reports you've designed:
      • A screen capture of a section of the report which shows the included dimensions and measure(s);
      • An explanation of the insights contained in the report and how these insights can be used by the company to understand their performance or make better decisions;
    3. Describe the benefits of allowing users to query a data warehouse in the form of an OLAP cube through their Web browser.
    Answer:

    * Internet sales amount by date by customer by product

The company can do some comparison among the country’s customer, several years or different product. Then they can know the sales amount clearly.

The company can know the gain or loss in the past years. And know each product’s sales amount in each country’s customer that they can make better decision in future. e.g. the stock amount in each country or where need to have a promotion.

They also can use these data to know which product has potential, and then do more promotion to gain profit.

    * Internet sales amount by data by sales channel by product

The company can know which product is the best selling product in particular year or several years. If it shows the product is no or less profit that we can fake it out.

It also shows the trend of the sales channels or methods within the range that we can choose the better sales way in the future. And do the comparison and analysis among these year to help to make the future planning and goals.

    * Internet Sales Amount by by Product by Employee by Date

This report objective is to reflect the sales executive who had a better performance in the specific period and what products are they keen on to sell it. Therefore, management can arrange different performance sales executive to cater different kind of customer accounts.

    * BENEFITS.

Increase the user's self-service and productivity, users can create and modify their own reports, create new calculations from existing metrics or apply filter conditions to the report. And same data can be viewed in different ways or from different dimensions. User can change it to view dynamically, unlike with paper based reports.

Less administrative burden, users manipulate reports on a multi-dimensional cache of data rather than a limited, proprietary cube database.

More user functionality and less maintenance lead to greater value from all enterprise BI application.

    Group Assignment: Post # 1

    • Interactive advertisement

    • Search engine

By the way, the examples you find do not all have to come from the same company.

In your group blog, list all the examples you find, together with links to each example. Also provide a description of the effectiveness of each example.

      Sample: http://hk.blog.yahoo.com/canon/

How to find out this blog via google?

    • Input keywords "canon" and "blog" in google search engine, the result will be shown as below which placed in Organic Search Engine Optimization.

    • Interactive advertisement
    Sample: http://advertising.nokia.com/what-we-do/nokia-interactive-solutions

"Interactive advertising uses online or offline interactive media to communicate with consumers and to promote products, brands, services, and public service announcements, corporate or political groups.

In the inaugural issue of the Journal of Interactive Advertising, editors Li and Leckenby (2000) defined Interactive Advertising as the "paid and unpaid presentation and promotion of products, services and ideas by an identified sponsor through mediated means involving mutual action between consumers and producers." This is most commonly performed through the Internet as a medium. Direct response, improved customer loyalty, increased traffic to your mobile site or physical store, brand awareness."
    • Search Engine
    Sample: www.google.com

"A Web search engine is a tool designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. The search results are usually presented in a list and are commonly called hits. The information may consist of web pages, images, information and other types of files. Some search engines also mine data available in newsbooks, databases, or open directories. Unlike Web directories, which are maintained by human editors, search engines operate algorithmically or are a mixture of algorithmic and human input."
    • Online partnerships or affiliate marketing
    Sample: www.amazon.com

"Merchants favor affiliate marketing because in most cases it uses a "pay for performance" model, meaning that the merchant does not incur a marketing expense unless results are accrued (excluding any initial setup cost). Some businesses owe much of their success to this marketing technique."
    • RSS feeds
    Sample: http://on.cc/rss_index.html

"RSS (abbreviation for Really Simple Syndication) is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format. An RSS document (which is called a "feed", "web feed", or "channel") includes full or summarized text, plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship. Web feeds benefit publishers by letting them syndicate content automatically. They benefit readers who want to subscribe to timely updates from favored websites or to aggregate feeds from many sites into one place. RSS feeds can be read using software called an "RSS reader", "feed reader", or "aggregator", which can be web-based, desktop-based, mobile device or any computerized Internet-connected device. A standardized XML file format allows the information to be published once and viewed by many different programs. The user subscribes to a feed by entering the feed's URI (often referred to informally as a "URL" (uniform resource locater), although technically, those two terms are not exactly synonymous) into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. The RSS reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new work, downloads any updates that it finds, and provides a user interface to monitor and read the feeds. RSS formats are specified using XML, a generic specification for the creation of data formats. Although RSS formats have evolved since March 1999, the RSS icon ("") first gained widespread use between 2005 and 2006."
    • Social Networking
    Sample: www.facebook.com

"A social network service focuses on building online communities of people who share interests and/or activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others. Most social network services are web based and provide a variety of ways for users to interact, such as e-mail and instant messaging services. Social networking has created new ways to communicate and share information. Social networking websites are being used regularly by millions of people, and it now seems that social networking will be an enduring part of everyday life. The main types of social networking services are those which contain directories of some categories (such as former classmates), means to connect with friends (usually with self-description pages), and recommender systems linked to trust. There have been some attempts to standardize these services to avoid the need to duplicate entries of friends and interests (see the FOAF standard and the Open Source Initiative), but this has led to some concerns about privacy."
    • Gadgets
Sample: The iPhone is a gadget that was released June 29, 2007.

"A gadget is a small technological object (such as a device or an appliance) that has a particular function, but is often thought of as a novelty. Gadgets are invariably considered to be more unusually or cleverly designed than normal technological objects at the time of their invention. Gadgets are sometimes also referred to as gizmos."
